After the resounding success of the 2023 course, FRDC is excited to announce a second opportunity for ten individuals to enroll in a five-day Fisheries Management program at the University of Wollongong (Monday 27 May to Friday 31 May 2024). 

This comprehensive course is ideal for aspiring fisheries managers or those looking to launch their careers in fisheries management. The program is also open to individuals with a passion for fisheries and a desire to transition into this important field. 

The Fisheries Management course will be led by Professor Alistair McIlgorm from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) who will be joined by other experts. 

Applications are open until 9am Friday 3 May 2024. Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted. 

FRDC will cover course fees, economy flights, accommodation, dinner and transfer costs for participants. 

Considerations before applying

Before applying, consider the following criteria:

  • This course is in-person only – double check course dates before applying 

  • This bursary is aimed at individuals unable to attend without bursary support (e.g. sole operators, small business, Management Advisory Committee members, or similar, with no access to professional development support)  

  • You will need to arrange your own transport and submit a reimbursement claim to FRDC 

  • This course is not open to individuals who have received FRDC professional development support in the last 18 months (inc. bursaries). 

  • Only one person per organisation can attend

  • This opportunity is only available for Australian residents

  • You will need to complete a FRDC bursary report after the course, which will need to be accompanied by photos and videos

How to apply

Complete an application via Fishnet (requires registration)

In Fishnet, select "Start a new application" and from the priorities, select "FRDC bursary: Fisheries Management Course (May 2024)"

Include answers with your application to these questions (e.g. upload as an attachment in Fishnet): 

  • Provide an overview of your fisheries management experience. 

  • Outline why you want to participate in the Fisheries Management course.  

  • Describe how this opportunity will benefit you and the fishing and aquaculture community.  

You will also need to include a detailed budget for any domestic flights, transfers to and from the airport, additional transport, and meals that you may need. FRDC will fund your course fees and accommodation separate from your application.
